Transferring courses

If you would like to take a course at another college or university please follow this process:

If it is any Virginia Community College, Mercer County Community College, or Montgomery College: Check the approved courses for transfer credit list. If the course is on the list, you will need to complete the form for permission, listing the course you will be taking and submit it to the registrar’s office. No signatures are needed.

If it is a course from another college or university or from another state community college: Complete the form for permission, attaching a copy of the course description from that college or university. Take the form and description to the department that will be accepting the credit. (example: a math course goes to mathematics, a health course goes to health sciences, etc) Once that department approves the course transfer, you will take the signed form to the registrar’s office.

If you are trying to transfer in a general education requirement: complete the form for permission, attaching a copy of the course description from that college or university. Take the form and description to the general education office for the Associate Dean or to the appropriate Cluster Coordinator

Once you are accepted into JMU, you can transfer in no more than three courses for General Education credit. No more than one transferred course may be applied to any one cluster and transfer credit will not be awarded for course offerings in Cluster Four, The American Experience  (HIST 225, JUST 225 and POSC 225) due to the content and unique features of these courses.
